THE FEAST OF SAINT MELANI AT THE PATRIARCHATE

On Sunday December 31, 2018, last day of the Civil Year/January 13, 2019, the Patriarchate celebrated the commemoration of Saint Melani the Roman, at her chapel inside the Holy Monastery of Megali Panagia, which is adjacent to the Hagiotaphite Brotherhood.

Saint Melani is witnessed at the Synaxarion of the Church as a noble rich Roman woman who after the death of her husband and children went to Egypt and fed thousands of starving monks and Christians who were persecuted by the Areans, and then, she came to Jerusalem, founded a Virgin’s house and a Nunnery and having lived there in ascesis and charity he died in the Lord in the year 410 A.D.

At this chapel, Vespers was held in the evening and the Divine Liturgy in the morning of the Feast, by the ministering Priest of the Monastery of Megali Panagia Archimandrite Makarios, Archimandrite Ieronymos  and Hierodeacon Demetrios. The chanting was delivered by Monks of Mount Athos and the services were attended by the nuns of the monastery and a congregation from Jerusalem.

After the Divine Liturgy the Abbess reverend Nun Melani, who has renovated the Church which is dedicated to the Entrance of the Theotokos in the Temple and has worked for the preservation of the icons in it, offered a reception to the congregation at the hegoumeneion.
