THE FEAST OF ST. DEMETRIOS AT THE PATRIARCHATE (2017)

On Wednesday 26th October/8th November 2017, the Patriarchate observed the memory of the Holy and Glorious Great Martyr Demetrios of Thessalonica at his chapel, next to the west part of the Hagiotaphite Brotherhood building, near the School which bears the name of this chapel.

Saint Demetrios, while living in Thessalonica, encouraged Nestor to defeat the wicked Lyaius in the stadium, and martyred for Christ during Diocletian and Maximian’s reign. At his tomb in Thessalonica myrrh gushes out, healing various illnesses and that is why he is also called Myrolyte.

In the aforementioned chapel, in honour of St. Demetrios Vespers was held in the evening and on the day of the feast the Divine Liturgy was led by the Most Reverend Metropolitan Joachim of Helenoupolis, with co-celebrants Elder Kamarasis Archimandrite Nectarios, Dragouman Archimandrite Mattheos, and Archdeacon Mark. The left choir singer of the All-holy Church of the Resurrection Mr. George Alvanos and the students of the Patriarchal School of Zion chanted the hymns, along with the Typikon Keeper of the H. Church of Saints Constantine and Helen Archimandrite Alexios, in the participation of a noble congregation.

During the Divine Liturgy H.H.B. our Father and Patriarch of Jerusalem came for veneration, escorted by Hagiotaphite Fathers.

After the Divine Liturgy the students of St. Demetrios School presented a festal ceremony at the School, which was attended by the Episcopal Entourage and the Patriarchal Commissioner Most Reverend Metropolitan Isychios of Kapitolias as well as noble pilgrims.
